Best Use of New Materials in a Project

Winner:

Daylun

Vegetable Glue

'The judges were impressed with the disruptive nature of the Vegetable Glue, the inspiration fed from other sectors like textiles, and the breadth of potential applications for the product. What stood out was the low-carbon, life-cycle sustainability, and the potential for it to address the key challenges of surface water management in urban areas utilising organic compounds. It also represented an opportunity to utilise local natural ‘feed stocks’ (e.g. corn or wheat) as a sustainable manufacturing resource. The panel recognised that there was risk in the adoption of this material, achieving technical assurance and it places a challenge, and responsibility, on the construction industry to be more fleet-of-foot in adopting new ideas. They believed that this product fitted with the core ideals of the TechFest Awards pushing the boundaries within the construction sector.'
