Innovative Consultant of the Year
This category seeks to recognise the best engineering consultants that are driving change and innovation through use of new digital and technological solutions in the design of civil engineering projects that the sector delivers.
Geoptic Infrastructure Investigations
Geoptic is an innovative provider of muon tunnel imaging services. Geoptic’s technology provides a three dimensional view of railway tunnel overburden, similar to a medical x-ray computed tomography 3D image, showing in clear detail the presence of density anomalies such as voids and concealed shafts; an impactful first for the UK in assuring the tunnel safety in the UK. The Geoptic team have had a breakthrough year, disrupting geophysical approaches for near-tunnel ground characterisation and monitoring across the breadth of closely-related tunnel engineering disciplines. The company’s work includes: The completion of two major programmes of muon tunnel surveys for shaft detection for Network Rail; digital modelling of an underground international nuclear waste disposal site to advise on the technology’s ability to enhance safety and security; and the development of a new, compact, downhole muon imaging system for density imaging near tunnels from the surface.
Laminar Projects
Laminar brings together experienced engineering professionals with sought-after technology experts, deploying some of the world’s brightest people across both fields on our mission to digitalise global construction. Our work with EKFB on HS2 comprised a huge data integration project involving a web app for document management, a data warehouse, and a suite of power BI reports. At Gatwick Airport Station with Emico, we implemented a dedicated PMO with comprehensive programme to streamline complex works. Using Shape, we set new standards and changed the culture regarding risk management. Lucy Rowsell, EKFB head of information management, stated: “Laminar has been instrumental in supporting our technical teams to identify and implement innovative solutions to business challenges." Tens of millions of people work in engineering globally. If they all work better, we can deliver a better world, faster, safer, and cheaper.
