Unlocking the power of AI to achieve early blockage detection in sewer networks

Arup, NI Water and Anaeko

Blockages in sewer networks pose a major challenge to wastewater companies and cost millions per year in repair work. In response, Arup developed an AI-powered predictive modelling algorithm for early blockage detection in sewers. The algorithm, initially developed on NI Water’s Lisnaskea catchment in partnership with Anaeko, can accommodate a range of sensor types and applications. It aims to issue early alerts to repair crews, enabling them to intervene before blockages can cause any significant impact on the network, the environment, and customers. The approach is scalable to multiple catchments, and is flexible to specific user needs. This enables the identification of patterns across multiple locations and supports a system-level data-driven predictive maintenance strategy. Shifting from a reactive approach to a predictive approach not only drastically reduces maintenance costs but increases whole life performance of assets across the network by ensuring that the system operates within its intended operational limits.

A19 Norton to Wynyard Digital Handover

AtkinsRéalis, Balfour Beatty and National Highways

Balfour Beatty Atkins have pushed new boundaries in the handover of major highway projects to the maintainer through our work on the A19 Norton to Wynyard project. BBA utilised the data-rich 3D project information model developed throughout design and construction to handover a robust and accurate digital twin. The digital twin contained all newly constructed and existing highway elements present such as pavement, barriers, lighting and drainage - geospatially positioned to their real-world coordinates. Each element also contained all asset data required by the client and maintainer which allowed the digital twin to form the primary maintenance and asset management record for the project. This significantly reduced the requirement for physical 2D drawings and drastically improved asset management workflows.

RoadCem

Powercem Technologies UK

In Summary we manufacture products which alter the hydration process of OPC, producing concretes, mortars, and hydraulically bound products with improved technical performance. The greater dynamic stiffness and increased Elastic Modulus allows us to produce strong concretes and bound soil foundation designs which can be tested/proved using linear strain analysis software with predictable settlement and shear characteristics. Sustainability and longevity are designed into all our products and with our unique hydration process not only allowing weaker and recycled aggregates to be utilised, but we also enable a greater percentage of cement to react with our water control technology. The nano process created with RoadCem works well with fine ash streams, increasing density and allowing even low pozzolanic waste streams such as IBA (household waste incinerator bottom ash) to be used to replace percentages of cement. Reducing carbon and increasing whole life performance in a cost-effective sustainable way.
