Chris Greaves is Head of Operations at the AMRC’s flagship Industry 4.0 facility, Factory 2050, which is home to the Integrated Manufacturing Group. He leads a team of talented engineers whose expertise spans a range of disciplines including robotics, automation, augmented and virtual reality, Artificial Intelligence and data analytics, large volume metrology and discrete event simulation. His own work has focused chiefly on developing innovative assembly processes for the aerospace and defence industry.
Established in 2001 as a partnership between researchers at the University of Sheffield and Boeing, the AMRC now has more than 120 members whose names read like a Who’s Who of the aerospace and automotive sectors. This includes Boeing, Airbus, McLaren, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce. The high-value manufacturing technologies and processes developed in aerospace are now being translated into the construction, where the AMRC is leading the way in developing new efficient technologies for the sector with new partners including Laing O’Rourke, Legal and General and Berkley Modular.
The construction sector is on the brink of a technological and manufacturing revolution. Developments in digital and other smart processes are enabling companies to complete projects at a greater pace and more efficiently than before. But this is just the beginning. Events such as TechFest not only celebrate what has been achieved, it also raises awareness of how much more can be achieved.
