Design in a day

Have you got what it takes to develop and pitch an innovative, economic and sustainable transport link? New Civil Engineer and Bentley Systems are calling on the industry’s bright young minds to enter our mini Hack, which takes place at our new Festival of Innovation and Technology on 14 September.

The challenge

You will be tasked with designing a transport link somewhere in the world, from scratch, in one day.

The link will be intended to drive regional economic growth but the design will need to be fully sympathetic to its environment and take account and connect with existing transport networks.
Your teamw ill have 5 hours to develop options, select a preferred solution and develop it to concept design level – in sufficient detail to present at a mock public consultation to our panel of expert judges on the same day.
The detailed scope of your challenge will be shared on the day but expect to use all the 5 hours available to explore conceptual design alternatives, develop an optimal solution and generate life-like visualisations and animations. To help your team deliver you will be given access to and training in the latest, cutting edge software from Bentley Systems, with a briefing session at Crossrail Bentley Information Academy in London on 5 September. You will get the chance to refine your newly acquired OpenRoads and OpenRail ConceptStation skills before gathering again at TechFest on 14 September for the main event.

In addition to being presented as the winner, live at TechFest, two lucky members from the winning team will each win the opportunity to attend and present at Bentley’s Year In Infrastructure Conference, taking place this year at one of the world’s most iconic venues, the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore between 10–12 October.
